About The Green MonkeyMy name is Rusty Sutton. I am the owner of The Green Monkey formerly MusicMax. I really appreciate you taking the time to shop with us and to learn more of what we are all about. I am a huge music and movie lover. As a kid, my mom played all kinds of music with an emphasis on country music. She loved Loretta Lynn therefore I became a huge Loretta fan and still am today! My sister and I used to pretend that we were Conway and Loretta. The only problem is I wanted to sing the Loretta parts. In my opinion, she always had the best part. My Mom also introduced me to rock/pop groups such as The Eagles, The Grass Roots and yes I was a child of the disco era. I love The Bee Gees, Donna Summer and all of the female singers of that era! I guessed you have figured out I am a gay male!! I love the movies too!! My Mom and Dad accused me of knowing more about the movies than I did my school subjects. And sometimes they were right! I love all kinds of movies from the 70s, even the bad ones. I am a big fan of the B-films we used to see at the local drive-in! However, I loved some of the classics from that era too. The Poseidon Adventure, The Way We Were, Jaws, Norma Rae and of course, Saturday Night Fever and Grease!! I loved the political dramas too such as Jane Fonda’s Coming Home, and All The President’s Men. Sally Field, Jane Fonda and of course, Barbra Streisand were some of my favorites. I also loved all of the Burt Reynolds movies. I am talking way too much!! Opening a music and movie store has always been a dream of mine. In 2003, that dream became a reality. I actually began buying and selling as a hobby in 2002, on ebay, but decided to make it all legal and start an actual business in 2003. The name MusicMax65 came from one of our cats. My partner and I had a cat named Max. He was setting beside me the night I registered on ebay and needed a user id. I thought Music and looked down at Max (1999-2006)., then put the 65 (the year I was born) at the end. MusicMax65 was born. At first, I sold only used CDs and vinyl records on ebay. In 2004, I expanded to some books, VHS video tapes and DVD's. In 2006, I decided to open a store on the web. I wanted an online shopping site that had the feel of the old neighborhood music stores. You remember the stores that were in your neighborhood, the clerk remembered your name and they actually knew about music. My partner and I love gay movies but also mainstream movies. He is a big action/adventure and science fiction fan. I love the dramas, romantic comedies and horror movies!! I decided to offer a unique online gay shopping experience by offering a variety of gay and non-gay items on one site! Now you can purchase a gay pride baseball cap, your favorite movie or TV series on DVD, a music CD, a DVD repair kit and much more!! A site dedicated to the online gay shopper! I live with Drew, my partner of 21+ years (and counting!) in the Raleigh, NC area. I am sad to say that we lost Max in September of 2006. But he will be in our hearts forever! During the Summer of 2007, I decided to change the name of the company to The Green Monkey. The reason for the change was because I felt that the word "Music" may be too limited and confuse our customers on what we really offer. Our focus was once just used records and CDs. In 2007, we decided to expand more into the specific movie genres such as family, horror, music & concert and alternative lifestyles. We also have expanded our gay pride offerings to include jewelry, accessories, house decor and much much more. We are constantly adding to our gay pride offerings. In 2008, we decided to make more adjustments and changes. We decided we wanted The Green Monkey to be a store that promoted alternative families in a positive way. A store where parents along with their children could shop. We expanded into children's books with an alternative family theme. We added T-shirts with positive sayings such as "Hate is not a family value", Love is all it takes to make a family" just to name a few. In the summer of 2009, we are expanding again. This time we are adding everyday greeting cards and stationery/memo pads. We have been chosen by a brand new NC company called Real World Products to be the first retailer in the Raleigh area to offer their products. Click here for more information. In 2011, we added many new products. We were the first retailer in the Raleigh area to carry the new Be A Friend clothing line for children and adults and Think Happy Stuff tshirts, magnets and ball caps.
